A product and its variants
Lemon drizzle sells in three sizes, so it is one product with three variants. The product carries the name, a photo and a category of your own. Each variant is one thing you sell at one price. Only the price is required. Leave the name blank and it is taken from what the variant is made of.
- Name, photo and a category
- One variant per size or version
- Price required, name optional
- A note on what the variant includes
What a variant is made of
The 1.2 kg lemon drizzle is that much sponge, 300 g of glaze from another recipe, and a box. A variant lists recipes at an amount and single ingredients such as fresh berries. It can also hold one tiered cake from the builder and flat lines for packaging or delivery. A recipe row can be sized by tin instead of by weight.
- Recipes at any amount or tin
- Single ingredients on their own
- One tiered cake from the builder
- Flat lines for packaging or delivery
Cost and margin as you build
While you add rows, the variant shows its cost, your price and the margin between them, in money and in percent. The cost comes from today’s ingredient prices, so a dearer butter changes every variant that uses it. A row with no price makes the figure approximate, and a packaging line without a cost does the same.
- Cost from today’s ingredient prices
- Margin in money and in percent
- Approximate while a price is missing
From the catalogue to the oven
Pick the variant in an order and its price and cost land on the line, with the cost frozen that day. Plan the order and three 1.2 kg drizzles become 3.6 kg of sponge. An embedded tiered cake is planned once per line, whatever the quantity. Delete the product a year on and past orders still read as sold.
- Price and cost on the order line
- Recipes planned at amount times quantity
- An embedded cake planned once per line
- Deleting never touches past orders
Not in the app
Three things the catalogue does not keep:
- Stock levels
- Wholesale or per-client prices
- Sales per product
Common questions
Does changing a variant’s price update open orders?
No. Every order keeps the price and cost it was sold at. Only orders taken afterwards see the new price.
Can a product have a single variant?
Yes. A product needs at least one, and one is enough for a cake sold in a single size.
