Creating a recipe
Ingredients in sections, a yield, a pan or cake size, and where the cake density comes from.

Ingredients in sections
Build a Black Forest the way you bake it: sponge in one section, cherry filling in another, cream on top. Each section shows its own weight. Start typing an ingredient and the app suggests what your library holds. A new name becomes a new ingredient. An amount is optional: salt to taste stays in the list, and the totals ignore it.
- One section per part of the cake
- Each section to the shopping list separately
- New ingredients created as you type
- Other recipes added as sub-recipes
- Lines without an amount
Yield, pan and cake size
Twelve brownies or 1.8 kg of batter: the yield is what one batch makes. A recipe will not save without it. A pan or a size is optional. A baking pan is the tin. It scales by area, so its height is ignored. A cake size is the finished cake, height included. It needs a yield in grams or kilograms.
- Yield required, pan optional
- Baking pan scaled by base area
- Cake size with height included
- Cake size needs a weight yield
Where the density comes from
Density is the weight of the finished cake divided by its volume. Give a recipe a cake size and a weight yield, and the app works it out. Your 20 cm sponge at 1.4 kg carries its density on its own. Some recipes cannot derive it: a plain pan, a cream, a cake counted in slices. For those you enter it yourself.
Instructions, time, photo and notes
Steps go in sections of their own, the sponge method apart from the assembly. You tick them off as you bake. Prep time and bake time have their own fields. Prep time scales with the batch and can price your labour by the hour. A photo shows in the library grid, and the original can be attached as a PDF.

Not in the app
Two things the editor does not do:
- Copy the photo, overhead and labour when you duplicate a recipe
- Add a photo while the phone is offline
Common questions
Does every recipe need a pan or a cake size?
No. Cookies, creams and anything you never resize do without one. Add a pan or a cake size when you want to scale by tin or use the recipe in a tiered cake.
