Scaling a recipe

Change the yield or the pan, and every amount, cost and dimension follows.

Change the yield, everything follows

An order asks for thirty muffins and the recipe makes twelve. Type 30 as the yield. Every amount, the cost, the calories and the pan size move with it. Prep time grows with the batch. Bake time does not. The recipe remembers the new figure until you tap back to the base yield. Over the free tier’s recipe limit, scaling turns read-only.

  • Amounts, cost and calories
  • Pan size at the new yield
  • Prep time grows, bake time stays
  • The scaled figure remembered

Scale by the pan instead

Your tin is 25 cm and the recipe says 20. Open the recipe and tap the “Baking pan” or “Cake size” card under the yield. The card appears once the recipe has a pan. Type the size you own, and the yield changes to match, with every amount behind it. A round tin swapped for a square one keeps the same yield.

Where the scaled recipe goes

Whatever the yield shows is what travels. A plan or an order takes the recipe at that size, with the adjusted pan. The shopping list takes the scaled amounts. A sub-recipe inside scales with the amount used, so the frosting follows the cake. Scaling inside a plan or an order leaves the recipe itself untouched.

  • Plans and orders at the scaled size
  • Shopping list with scaled amounts
  • PDF export at the scaled yield
  • Sub-recipes scaled with the cake

Not in the app

Two things scaling does not touch:

  • Bake time; it stays as you entered it
  • The height of a baking pan; only its base area counts

Common questions

Does scaling change my recipe?

No. The base yield and its amounts stay as you wrote them. The scaled figure is remembered until you return to the base yield.
